A steel milk bucket with an electric charger that can chill milk in 30 minutes has the potential to revolutionize the Indian dairy industry. The nano-fluid technology bucket can store seven liters of milk and cool it from 37 ° C to 7 ° C in 30 minutes. Dairy innovator Ravi Prakash, who is pursuing a doctorate at the Agricultural Research Council of India-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Bengaluru, expects the bucket, which costs around Rs 9,000 in the first iterations of the prototype, be affordable. With financial grants from NDRI, he invested over Rs 10 lakh to design a system that cools raw milk from room temperature below the critical limit.

“After milking, time is of the essence to preserve quality, as the farmer transports it to the collection center on the way to the cooling center, twice a day,” Prakash explains. His experience as the son of a farmer from Harsari in West Champaran district of Bihar, and his education (a BTech degree from NDRI, Karnal), prompted him to prepare the prototype of the bucket. The device won him the BRICS Young Innovator Prize in 2019, which included a cash award of $ 25,000. He expects his invention to be available to farmers for less than 5,000 rupees by mid-2023.
