Alfa Laval acquires stake in innovative friction reduction technology, supporting sustainable shipping

LUND from Sweden, July 8, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Alfa Laval has taken a minority stake in the Netherlandstechnology company based at Marine Performance Systems. Its innovative air lubrication technology significantly reduces the friction of ships during navigation, resulting in fuel savings. The patented solution can be installed on vessels of any size or fuel type and is also suitable for retrofitting. The signing and closing date was July 8, 2021.

The friction of a vessel while it is sailing is the most important factor in its fuel consumption, and the cost of fuel accounts for up to 60% of a vessel’s operating expenses. Fuel consumption also has a direct impact on greenhouse gas emissions, as the reduction of 1 tonne of fossil fuel consumption equates to the reduction of approx. 3 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Marine Performance Systems air lubrication technology generates microbubbles under the vessel’s hull, reducing friction between vessel and water by 50-70%, resulting in net fuel savings of 8-12%, at normal operating speed. The technology was first tested on a seagoing vessel in 2020 and the results were confirmed by the shipowner during several months of operation.

“This innovative friction reduction technology further expands our toolbox for sustainable shipping, and with investments like this, we continue to support our maritime customers in their transition to more efficient and sustainable operations,” said Sameer kalra, president of the marine division.

Did you know that… Alfa Laval’s latest investment links the present with the past, as founder of Alfa Laval Gustave de Laval filed a patent for a similar solution in 1883 (albeit as an accelerator – not to save fuel) but the innovation was not commercialized at the time?
