DIVA offers a variety of seasonal classes and workshops in traditional mediums such as drawing and painting as well as newer media including film and video.

FALL 2008 SCHEDULE
The History of Film: The Great Directors (LCC COURSE # 23171)

October 5th, November 2nd, and December 7th

Time: 1:30 PM - 9:30 PM with breaks

This EVENT is an LCC class exploring the work of the world's greatest filmmakers. If you love great films, and love learning about them –this class is for you! Former Hollywood Director and DIVA screenwriting instructor Thomas Blank hosts this seminar series held the first Sunday of the month. Using three films by a director the class will explore the trends and highlights of the history of the movies in a casual environment. This class lasts a full day, so participants are invited to make themselves comfortable. Chairs are provided, but some will prefer to bring pillows and sit on the floor. There will be two breaks and students are welcome to bring snacks.

Beginning Web Photography

November 22nd

Time 9:00 AM - 12:00 Noon

Instructor: John Watson

Tuition: $30
 

Students will learn how to create images for the web, email and other Internet applications. Attention will be given to creating digital files for CD presentation of artwork. Materials: There is no material fee for this class. Students need to bring their complete digital camera kits, along with any accessories they have. Students may also bring laptop computers.
John Watson holds an MFA degree from Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi with a concentration in photography and art history.
 
Intermediate Bookbinding for Artists

December 2nd and 3rd

Time: 6:30 - 9:30 PM

Instructor: John Watson

Fee: $40 ($28 for DIVA Members) plus $15 Materials Fee (see below)

 
Students will learn how to make a case-bound, kettle-kettle stitched book. This format features a hard cover and spine. This binding style is perfect for journals and sketchbooks. Students can use the skills acquired here to create beautiful gifts for Christmas or any occasion.

The materials and methods for the embellishment of covers and pages, and the creation of closures are covered. Students also learn about the history of bookbinding, papermaking and printing during the class, especially as it relates to the type of binding being taught.

Materials Fee: $15.00 per student, which provides the following materials: Art board, paper, glue, thread and needles for binding projects. Students bring metal rulers, plastic triangles, Xacto knives, spare blades and a bone folder if they have one. Instructor has several bone folders to loan. Students may also bring any ephemera, interesting items or art supplies they may wish to incorporate into the project.
 
John Watson holds an MFA degree from Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi in studio arts. He has worked with all aspects of creating artists books including layout, design, impositions and contruction.
 
Make Your Own Holiday Art Cards & Gifts

December 13th

Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Fee: $12

Materials Provided

 
Create your own holiday cards, gift tags, or decorations in the form of a personal work of art. Using the theme of collage in this workshop you will use mixed media techniques, as well as markers and alcohol inks to make unique works of art for the holidays. Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own unique accessories to personalize your creation.
 
ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS

Thomas Blank recently retired from a career in Hollywood film and television directing. Blank worked on various projects at Warner Brothers and Universal as an assistant director (working occasionally but briefly with Dick Donner, George Seaton, Robert Wise, Elia Kazan, and Alfred Hitchcock) until he started to receive directing assignments of his own.

 

Thomas Blank's television production resume goes back to "The FBI" with Efrem Zimbalist Jr., and includes: "The Name of the Game"; "The Sixth Sense"; "The Bold Ones"; "The Hulk"; "The Misfits of Science"; and several movies of the week, as well as the "Bionic Woman"; "Ironside"; "and "Switch."
  
John Watson has an MFA in studio art from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He has studied
bookbinding and hand papermaking at the Museum of Printing History in Houston, Texas; and with Beck Whitehead and Heidi Kyle at the Southwest School of Art and Craft in San Antonio, Texas. Watson has taught multiple workshops in Corpus Christi, including workshops for children. Most of his workshops were conducted at the Peoples Street Photo Project, the gallery he owned prior to moving to Eugene in August of 2008. Watson's handmade books are in several collections in the US and abroad.
